What to Bring to the Laundromat
Your first laundromat visit will go much smoother if you come prepared. Here's what to bring:
- Your dirty laundry — Sort it at home if possible (whites, darks, colors, delicates). This saves time at the laundromat.
- Detergent — Most laundromats sell detergent, but bringing your own is cheaper and lets you use your preferred brand. At Sandy Creek Laundromat, we have detergent available for purchase if you forget.
- Quarters or a payment app — Many laundromats now accept app-based payments. Sandy Creek accepts coins and the PayRange app (credit/debit/Apple Pay/Google Pay). We also have an ATM and change machines on-site.
- A laundry bag or basket — Something to carry your clothes in and out.
- Something to do — A load takes about 45 minutes total. Bring your phone, a book, or use our free Wi-Fi and TVs.
- Hangers (optional) — If you want to hang shirts or dresses immediately after drying to prevent wrinkles.
How Laundromat Machines Work
If you've never used commercial washers and dryers, here's the basic process:
- Choose your machine size — Laundromats have different size washers. Pick one that fits your load without overstuffing. Your clothes should fill about 2/3 of the drum. At Sandy Creek, we have 20 lb ($3.75), 40 lb ($5.25), and 60 lb ($8.50) washers.
- Load your clothes — Put your sorted clothes in the washer. Close the door firmly.
- Add detergent — Pour detergent into the dispenser tray (usually on top or inside the door). Don't overdo it — commercial machines need less detergent than home machines.
- Pay and start — Insert coins or use the payment app. The machine will start automatically. Most wash cycles run 25-30 minutes.
- Transfer to dryer — When the wash cycle ends, move your clothes to a dryer promptly. Don't leave them sitting in the washer — other customers may need the machine.
- Dry your clothes — Add your payment and start the dryer. Most loads dry in 15-25 minutes. Check your clothes and add more time if needed.
- Fold and go — Fold your clothes at the folding tables provided. Pack up and you're done!
Laundromat Etiquette: The Unwritten Rules
Every laundromat has unwritten rules that regulars follow. Here are the most important ones:
- Don't leave clothes unattended in finished machines — Other customers are waiting. If your cycle ends, move your clothes promptly. At busy laundromats, someone may remove your clothes from the machine if you leave them too long.
- Wipe down machines after use — A quick wipe of the drum and door keeps things clean for the next person.
- Don't hog the folding tables — Fold your clothes and clear the table for others. Don't spread out across multiple tables.
- Clean the lint trap — Always clean the dryer lint trap before starting your load. It helps your clothes dry faster and prevents fire hazards.
- Keep an eye on your kids — If you bring children, supervise them. Laundromat machines are not toys.
- Be mindful of noise — Keep phone calls and music at a reasonable volume.
- Don't overload machines — Overstuffing a washer means your clothes won't get clean. It can also damage the machine.
How Long Does Laundry Take at a Laundromat?
A typical laundromat visit takes about 45 minutes to 1.5 hours, depending on how many loads you're doing. Here's the breakdown:
- Sorting and loading: 5-10 minutes
- Wash cycle: 25-30 minutes
- Transfer to dryer: 2-3 minutes
- Dry cycle: 15-25 minutes
- Folding: 10-15 minutes
Pro Tip: The biggest time-saver at a laundromat is doing multiple loads simultaneously. Unlike at home where you wash one load at a time, you can run 3-4 washers at once and have all your laundry done in the same 45 minutes it takes to do one load.
Tips for a Fast, Easy Laundry Day
After years of helping customers at Sandy Creek Laundromat, here are our best tips for making laundry day as painless as possible:
- Sort at home — Pre-sorting your laundry into bags (whites, darks, colors) saves 10+ minutes at the laundromat.
- Go during off-peak hours — Weekday mornings and early afternoons are usually the least busy. Weekend mornings are the busiest.
- Use the right size machine — Don't use a 60 lb machine for a small load. You'll waste money. Match your load to the machine size.
- Don't over-dry — Over-drying wastes money and can shrink clothes. Check your clothes a few minutes before the cycle ends.
- Bring a mesh bag for delicates — Bras, underwear, and delicate items last longer when washed in a mesh laundry bag.
- Consider wash & fold — If you hate doing laundry, most laundromats (including Sandy Creek) offer drop-off wash & fold service. You bring in your dirty clothes, and we wash, dry, fold, and package everything for you. It starts at just $1.49/lb.
